NUMBER 10

ALICE COOPER - ALONG CAME A SPIDER

At a little over 10 minutes, it's debatable as to whether this is an extended Music Video or a Music Movie. Looking at the intro and outro credits you'll see that this is most definitely billed as a Movie. It's directed by Piggy D. of Rob Zombie fame, and also co-stars Mr. Slash himself on Guitar. Overall, this is put together with the theatrics, plot, and pace that define a movie. The Music is awesome. The Video is way cool. And The Cooper/Slash collaboration is simply kick ass ! After checking out this little gem I really didn't care if it was ten minutes or ten hours. It just felt damn good.

NUMBER 9

QUEEN : LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM

There are those that do not appreciate that which is Queen. They are truly missing out. As a testament to that is this mid 80s DVD set that features the Band at the pinnacle of their career. The Musicianship is outstanding and the crowd serves well as the fifth Band member. And the Show. DAMN. Freddie Mercury will probably go down as perhaps one of the most talented and charismatic Showman ever. He truly takes on the role of the song and delivers a performance extraordinaire. And oh yeah. Brian May's guitar virtuosity is showcased here with an electric finesse that both rocks and soothes the soul. Bassist John Deacon and Drummer Roger Taylor were mainstays of the Band that consistently provided solid and exceptional performances. Hey, Queen freakin' rocked people. Put this in your Player unbiased. Check it out and you will hear Queen say it for themselves : "WE WILL ROCK YOU. "

NUMBER 8

TOMMY

Ah yes. The Pinball Wizard. Tommy. Elton John. Tina Turner. The Who. There you go. Individually, I'd have to be honest and say that Neither Elton nor Tina rocked. Seriously. They were cool for what they did but what they did was something other than rock. And that just was not and is not my style. Ok. Lecture over. Back to why I think this does rock. The overall production of this conceptual Rock Opera was outstanding for it's time and stands it's ground as a timeless rock classic. Music by the Who is the most memorable from the film and "Pinball Wizard" itself was written by Who Bassist Pete Townsend. Released in 1975 this is an oldie for sure. Like it or not this is a classic and legendary movie in the halls of rock. If you've seen it you agree. If you haven't, then crank this up before The Acid Queen comes to get you.

NUMBER 7

Yngwie Malmsteen With The New Japan Philharmonic - Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar & Orchestra In E Flat Major

A contender if not winner in the longest title for a Music Video ever, this doesn't need a lot of buildup. It plays out three ways. 1) You love Yngwie's work and this will blow you away. 2) You can't stand Yngwie and this won't change your mind. 3) You've never heard of Yngwie, in which case here....let me lift that rock up. Check this out ! It's YNGWIE. Love him or hate him the guy is an undisputed master of strings. Throw in some complex Orchestral music from a world renown group and you've got the epitome of awesomeness. I've had the honor of being able to speak with his Yngwieness recently and the dude was way cool indeed. He was every bit as awesome a friend as he is a Guitarist. This DVD is actually very limited and rare so grab a copy if you can find it. Trust me, it won't be cheap but nothing really good is. After all, who really finds it rewarding to drink cheap beer ? Get this. It's the good stuff.

NUMBER 6

JIMI HENDRIX - LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST

I am not a Fan of Jimi Hendrix. What I mean is that I don't have any of his music on hand, and I probably never will. The thing is I know who he is. I've heard him play. I've seen him play (in videos people, good lord, I'm not that old). And I know by this that even if I don't play his music for my listening pleasure, the Purple Hazer was indeed instrumental (pun intended) in shaping the visuals and sounds of hard rock music. I can respect that. And that being said, This DVD is what Hendrix was all about. It's always awesome to watch while thinking " Goddamn ! That was in the sixties ? He was doing that then ? " Yes he was. And Live at the Fillmore East captures the essence of Jimi perfectly.

NUMBER 5

QUEENSRYCHE - OPERATION : LIVECRIME

This Video version of the Operation : Mindcrime CD is exceptionally stunning. The Band is totally in their element and Pamela Moore is captivating as Suite Sister Mary. As front man for the Band, Geoff Tate's vocals and performance is as good as it gets. There's a very cool concept storyline here, but they could have done this about baking bread and it would've kicked ass. Oh man. I've seen this, well, let's see, about a garillion times. And I'll watch it some more. Because my friends, this is Queensryche. And that alone is good enough for me.

NUMBER 4

IRON MAIDEN - FLIGHT 666

At the time this was released, I was working as a Manager for one of Houston's biggest theatres. One of the perks was viewing Screeners before they were released to the public. I got to see this with my brother after midnight in a huge theatre with a four story screen, state of the art surround sound and a very cool laid back buzz. It was just the two of us and Iron Maiden. AND IT FREAKIN' RULED PEOPLE ! IT RULED. They cover 30 countries in 30 days, take all their people and equipment in one HUGE plane called Ed Force One and none other than Maiden Vocalist Bruce Dickinson is the pilot for one of the most ambitious rock tours ever created. Add the live concert footage and behind the scenes stuff and this will make your senses reel. Check this out. I highly recommend viewing this with a damn good buzz.

NUMBER 3

THIS IS...SPINAL TAP !

Can anyone that has seen this Mockumentary ever pick just one favorite part ? These go to 10 ? The dwarves dancing around a micro Stonehenge ? Getting lost backstage ? The Pod that wouldn't open ? The revealing of the 'Smell the Glove' album cover ? There are so many classic and memorable moments that this is definitely a Top 3 on anyone's list. You can see this over and over and over and it never gets old. The way the guys in the Band deliver their lines makes you believe that they are indeed Spinal Tap. And the support cast is really funny in their deadpan antics. Crank up "Sex Farm", "Hellhole", "Big Bottom" and the rest of this satirical look at rock life. And remember, it's Spinal TAP, not Spinal TARP.

NUMBER 2

PINK FLOYD - THE WALL

I remember seeing this for the very first time and thinking : 'WHOA." Yep. That was about it. WHOA. I mean this Movie redefined the conceptual music video for me in that it successfully played out on film just as well as it does musically. I truly believe that the audio visual aspects of this film are dependent on one another and that having just one makes the experience incomplete. I consider this a masterpiece of artistic expression that is rocks on all levels. Now to be fair, I've seen this with people that consider it a bummer due to the overwhelming dark tone the visuals and lyricism present. However, this must be viewed as more than a wildly strange depressing tale. It's the Wall. How you see it depends on what side of the wall you're standing on.
